Hideyoshi was quite possibly one of the most important rulers of Japan and he came from extremely humble beginnings. As the Taiko ruler It was unheard of that the "little monkey" or Kozaru (as he was called by his superior Oda Nobunaga), who came from such a low family that he didn't even have a proper family name and could only get work as a sandal bearer, would rise to the role of daimyo and eventually rule Japan with the Emperor's authority behind him. Although never officially shogun, he was granted the powers of one and his lands were far reaching and many of his decrees changed the face of Japan well into modernity.
